5 TIPS FOR CHOOSING ART FOR YOUR HOME

A sweet reader Lisa wrote in and said this, “…I love the way you use art in your home with abandon. It’s fearless and bold and colorful. Do you have any tips for bringing in art to our own homes? I don’t even know where to start…” This is a great question, and something we’re really passionate about. So we thought we’d share a little of what we’ve learned along the way: 5 tips for choosing art for your home.

1. It doesn’t have to be pricey

Duh. I think you wouldn’t be reading here if you didn’t know that. When we were young and newly married, we were on a very tight budget. And even now it taught us to think creatively. When it came to our home, I learned very quickly that I could save up {for years} and spend thousands, or create / source my own home decor and art using a combination of avenues and resources that would be “against the grain”.

A designer at heart, art was still something I was passionate about. I found myself limited, pining over big box stores’ pricy options.

Dark, glossy pieces from Bombay were totally a thing, and expensive hefty frames in gilded gold edges were the other half of the cost.

Nope. I had to wash my hair that day. I think we all know that it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to be epic.

We love checking out sources now, like the endless possibilities that come with Etsy, and Society 6 – where artists are showcasing their beautiful works. Ebay is also a great option, with all the awesome ideas that abound. We’ve also been known to frame a reproduced poster, and no one would ever know it wasn’t a one of a kind… it’s all in the presentation, after all.

2. Create your own one of a kind pieces

That may be intimidating because you might have no idea where to begin. We’ve got you covered for a few ideas over here, but the possibilities really are endless.

This fun abstract art is something awesome for the whole family…

This diy american map which is a statement piece all its own…

Or this fun dry erase board with Frogtape® that’s functional and fun!

3. Thrift it

You never know what you’ll find at the local flea market, from vintage paint by numbers to old photographs… floor plans and envelopes, magazine covers… and more. From family history to something intriguing in an old portrait, be sure to check out elements of the older variety for interesting, affordable pieces. The more collected and eclectic, the more interesting, for sure.

4. There’s always us

Shameless plug, but we have a TON of offerings on our site, from planners to wall art and so much more. Check it out for lots of options! You never know what you’ll find…

We also have our own store here where you can find all our available prints of art… A great opportunity to go bold and large in your home, and collect some fun statement pieces. I guess we’re shamelessly biased, but we think that’s kinda fun.

5. Frame it yourself

Remember when I mentioned the chunky gold {über expensive frames circa 2002} above? It doesn’t have to be like that. We have an entire gathering of tutorials here, on how to make frames, laid all out just for you. From keepsakes to framing your own pieces, the possibilities really are endless for all kinds of skill levels.

Looking back, we’re really grateful for limitations, that forced us to think outside the big box {store} and all those ridiculously jacked up prices with limited options…
